This team uses military intelligence to influence adversarial foreign governments or other groups that may conflict with the United States and its objectives. A Psychological Operations Specialist, which is military occupational specialty MOS 37F, analyzes and develops the information used to create a psychological effect on a particular population.
These specialists collect and report on psychological information, frequently while in the field. They gather intelligence and conduct studies to determine psyops targets.
And they prepare and retrieve information on psyops-related intelligence, products, and campaigns. Based on the information collected, these soldiers can determine the psychological vulnerabilities of potential psyops targets.
They learn what kinds of intelligence will be effective in persuading or influencing either an enemy such as a warlord or dictator or a population that may be affected by that enemy such as the residents the warlord or dictator leads.
These soldiers are trained to determine how to conduct a psyop campaign, and what mix of media to use. That determination is often made based on the available assets and the location of the operation.
It wouldn't do much good, for instance, to suggest a psyop campaign using television ads in English in an area without regular access to electricity where the population speaks another language. A psychological operations specialist takes 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 14 weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Active-duty soldiers follow this training with three weeks of Airborne training and between four and six months of language training. For soldiers in the Army Reserves, the additional language and airborne training are not required.
You'll also need to qualify for a secret security clearance from the Department of Defense since you'll be handling highly sensitive information. It will entail a background, and criminal records check, and some past drug offenses may disqualify you from eligibility.
If you've ever served in the Peace Corps, you are not eligible for this job. The U. If foreign countries suspected that Peace Corps personnel could one day serve in military intelligence, that could endanger the personnel and hamper their operations. Other disqualifying factors include any record of conviction by court-martial and any record of conviction by civil court for anything other than minor traffic violations.
The average PT goal for a class is with a score of 70 in each event in the to year-old category. There is no civilian occupation that is directly equivalent to MOS 37F. But the training and experience may prepare you for post-military careers in market research, marketing, promotions, and public relations.

As Admiral Olson states, "This will be a complete change in organization, practice, and doctrine.
Admiral Olson's memo announcing this decision states that the active duty PSYOP community is very receptive to this change. Based on my discussions with some active duty personnel over the past couple of years, I don't believe this to be the case. Of course, all of them knew that I was writing an article for publication, and asked for non-attribution.
Alfred Paddock, Jr. Army, and served three combat tours in Laos and Vietnam with Special Forces. McClure Medal for Exemplary Service in Psychological Operations, recognizing his lifetime of achievements and outstanding service to the Psychological Operations Regiment. Not to take away from the main point of the thread, but found this while searching something on my family.
Little blown away to find out that there is now an award named after my Great Grandfather Robert McClure. Now is the time to sit down and think about a new Unit Name and Branch name that takes in consideration the activity's name change.
It’s official: Army unveils brown beret, new patch for military advisers, SFAB
PSYOP term as an activity has changed for a more palatable term, oh well this is not new. What would be the future of this? Would a new structure emerge out of this? What about Public Affairs, would they adapt to the change?
In some respect yes, it has changed, however the overarching method and the target audience is still the same regardless of the name change. It's been ridiculously difficult to recruit the right numbers the last few years and given that they are adding a selection process soon, changing the name to MISO is going to nearly ensure that recruiting will fall off the chart.
As the guy that spent the last two years at Human Resources Command I offer the elephant in the room that I'm quite sure no one has considered. We like to think that the young Captains volunteering for this duty have a cogent concept of what exactly PSYOP does or doesn't do.
This is generally not the case I assure you. They apply because it sounds cool. The only thing they can do to save things right now is to make the course as challenging as possible such that folks want to be a member of something elite.
Moreover it is also an activity. I am not simply talking about a 18E like communicator i. Just as it does not have a SF company. Sir: I see the point of looking at the 18E model. However, my thought was to look at needed skill sets based on requirements.
Knowing the full comms requirement would be the logical first question to be answered. I do not know if that is fully comprehended. When they do, SigDet personnel of some stripe are usually detailed to support them.Various techniques are used, and are aimed at influencing a target audience's value system, belief system, emotionsmotivesreasoningor behavior.
It is used to induce confessions or reinforce attitudes and behaviors favorable to the originator's objectives, and are sometimes combined with black operations or false flag tactics. It is also used to destroy the morale of enemies through tactics that aim to depress troops' psychological states. Target audiences can be governmentsorganizationsgroupsand individualsand is not just limited to soldiers.
Civilians of foreign territories can also be targeted by technology and media so as to cause an effect in the government of their country. In Propaganda: The Formation of Men's AttitudesJacques Ellul discusses psychological warfare as a common peace policy practice between nations as a form of indirect aggression.
This type of propaganda drains the public opinion of an opposing regime by stripping away its power on public opinion.
This form of aggression is hard to defend against because no international court of justice is capable of protecting against psychological aggression since it cannot be legally adjudicated. There is evidence of psychological warfare throughout written history. In modern times, psychological warfare efforts have been used extensively.
Mass communication allows for direct communication with an enemy populace, and therefore has been used in many efforts. In recent times, the internet allows for campaigns of disinformation and misinformation performed by agents anywhere in the world.
Since prehistoric times, warlords and chiefs have recognized the importance of weakening the morale of opponents. In the Battle of Pelusium BC between the Persian Empire and ancient Egyptthe Persian forces used cats and other animals as a psychological tactic against the Egyptians, who avoided harming cats due to religious belief and spells. Currying favor with supporters was the other side of psychological warfare, and an early practitioner of such this was Alexander the Greatwho successfully conquered large parts of Europe and the Middle East and held on to his territorial gains by co-opting local elites into the Greek administration and culture.
Alexander left some of his men behind in each conquered city to introduce Greek culture and oppress dissident views. His soldiers were paid dowries to marry locals in an effort to encourage assimilation. Genghis Khanleader of the Mongolian Empire in the 13th century AD employed less subtle techniques. Defeating the will of the enemy before having to attack and reaching a consented settlement was preferable to facing his wrath.
The Mongol generals demanded submission to the Khan and threatened the initially captured villages with complete destruction if they refused to surrender. If they had to fight to take the settlement, the Mongol generals fulfilled their threats and massacred the survivors. Tales of the encroaching horde spread to the next villages and created an aura of insecurity that undermined the possibility of future resistance.
The Khan also employed tactics that made his numbers seem greater than they actually were. During night operations he ordered each soldier to light three torches at dusk to give the illusion of an overwhelming army and deceive and intimidate enemy scouts. He also sometimes had objects tied to the tails of his horses, so that riding on open and dry fields raised a cloud of dust that gave the enemy the impression of great numbers. His soldiers used arrows specially notched to whistle as they flew through the air, creating a terrifying noise.
Another tactic favored by the Mongols was catapulting severed human heads over city walls to frighten the inhabitants and spread disease in the besieged city's closed confines. This was especially used by the later Turko-Mongol chieftain.
The Muslim caliph Omarin his battles against the Byzantine Empiresent small reinforcements in the form of a continuous stream, giving the impression that a large force would accumulate eventually if not swiftly dealt with.
During the early Qin dynasty and late Eastern Zhou dynasty in 1st Century AD China, the Empty Fort Strategy was used to trick the enemy into believing that an empty location was an ambush, in order to prevent them from attacking it using reverse psychology. This tactic also relied on luck, should the enemy believe that the location is a threat to them.Mark Milley responded to the backlash by vowing to redesign the cover to an unequivocal shade of brown.
SFAB soldiers also donned a revamped unit patch and tab, retaining the sword and spearhead elements of the original. SFABs, manned with specially trained military advisers, are designed to fill the role that brigade and division headquarters have been filling in places like Iraq and Afghanistan for the past several years, where command and staff elements would deploy to train and advise local troops.
This model eroded readiness as a whole, officials have said, because it separated brigade headquarters from their combat elements, which would stay behind.Smart life app devices
SFABs are made up of officers and noncommissioned officers who have already completed a stint in an operational unit. The effort to stand up the brigades — the Army plans to stand up six in all — has come from the highest levels of the Army, with Milley voicing his support for this growing need in the Army. And this time, the outcry came fast and hard. For more newsletters click here. Last fall, response to the leaked patches and beret came swiftly, particularly from the Special Forces community.
Many were unhappy that brand new brigades were receiving a tab and a colored beret like storied airborne, Ranger and SF troops, especially when initial photos of the beret looked very much like those worn by the elite Green Berets.
In essence, he said, the SFAB beret is in a warm brown shade traditionally worn by infantry soldiers. The Green Beret community also pushed back against the unit patch, arguing that it was too close to the arrowhead and dagger symbols that unite SF units.
With their uniform items now in place, the 1st SFAB is preparing to deploy to Afghanistan, where it will attach to local forces to guide and facilitate internal peacekeeping and combat operations.
The 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade will make its maiden deployment to Afghanistan in the spring, according to a Thursday release from the Army.

Fear of missing out? Thanks for signing up. Army advisers in specialized unit set to deploy to Afghanistan The 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade will make its maiden deployment to Afghanistan in the spring, according to a Thursday release from the Army.In actuality, the military discipline can be pretty mundane: designing leaflets and driving sound trucks around, not plying your enemies with LSD.
Now the Pentagon brass is mulling a name change that would make the cadre seem even more humdrum. If the switch goes through.
Judging by the online reaction, the PSYOP community is none-too-pleased with the idea of a watery new acronym. The intimidation factor brought on by the words alone are what attracts many recruits to the MOS [Military Occupation Specialty]. Now when you hear MISO you might as well just join admin or supply. Thus, it is particularly ironic that some would change the name of PSYOP units that employ nonlethal means to support these combat arms.
Apparently, undermining the morale of the enemy is more politically incorrect than killing them. To illustrate the acronym switch, the blog posted a picture of a bowl of miso soup. Well, that was too much for Alex. View Comments. Sponsored Stories Powered By Outbrain. Yes, Again.
